Nawagaththegama Divisional Secretariat is located in the Puttalam district of the
North western province.It is located 200-250 feet above mean sea level.Nawagattegama
North in Giribawa, East by Galgamuwa, Southern by Anamaduwa and Kotavehera and West
by Anamaduwa and Karuwalagaswewa Divisional Secretary Divisions with 167 sq. Km. 83
villages have been divided into 19 Grama Niladari Divisions.Total population is 18296
by 2016.9012 males and 9284 females. There are 6295 families in the Nawagaththegama
Divisional Secretariat Division, out of which 99% are Sinhalese and Buddhists Sri Lanka has a semi-arid regional climatic characteristics, with a temperature of
30-320 degrees Celsius,reaching the peak of March, April,July and August.The highest
rainfall is recorded in the rainy and northeast monsoon rains. There is a red brown
soil, but its sand particles are large.The Iginimitiya reservoir and the canal stream
from the Mi Oya that flows from the division have enabled the farmers in the area to
have an agricultural economy and have become main contributors to the cultivation of
chena. Today they have cultivated maize oranges and pepper crops.
Since 1977 only the regional sub office, Agrarian Services Office and Rural Hospital
have been limited to a number of government institutions, with the advancing of the
divisional secretariat and pradeshiya sabha. The Nawagaththegama division has some
ancient Buddhist places of worship,except for the lack of water,wild elephant damages
and transport difficulties. The Mullegama Raja Maha Viharaya and the Ralapanawa Raja
Maha Viharaya, which is supposed to have been built during the reign of King Dappula,
is also witnessed by this. This is one of the most difficult areas in Nawagaththegama
in Sri Lanka,where Saiman Wimalarathne Kumaragama are the famous writters living there
